Graduate Women in Science at Cornell

About Us

Organization Description

The Graduate Women in Science (GWiS) of Cornell is an organization in the Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement (OISE) run by graduate students and postdocs. The goals of GWiS are:

(1) to improve the lives of all individuals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at Cornell University by empowering women and gender minorities in our community and

(2) to make the tools of science and scientific thinking available to everyone, irrespective of identity or background.

Mission

We are committed to improving the culture of the sciences at Cornell and in Ithaca with a combination of outreach and advocacy. We uphold that improving the scientific culture to help women and gender minorities thrive in the sciences requires improving the working conditions for everyone in our community, especially marginalized groups. As such, we are committed to building unity with everyone on the Cornell campus who is committed to improving the culture of the academy.

Contribute to our Inclusion Statement

We are seeking member feedback on the configuration of GWiS. Lately, we’ve been thinking a lot about the composition of the GWiS executive board, active membership, and how to address our representation.

To outline our thoughts on this, we have written a GWiS inclusion statement, which we hope will help us take action to better serve the needs of our members (Especially those who have historically been marginalized in science on the basis of their gender and gender identity, not just cisgender women).

We invite you to comment directly on our GWiS inclusion statement with suggestions or modifications.
